What is Counselling?

People come to counselling for many different reasons. For some they may be feeling depressed, anxious, feeling stressed with work, grieving the loss of a loved one or maybe having difficulties in their relationships. At times when we may come across these difficulties we can feel stuck in our lives and feel overwhelmed by our emotions. Counselling offers an opportunity to discuss how you feel in a safe environment without feeling judged. I am able to support you in a compassionate and open manner to build a genuine therapeutic relationship which is the key to good therapy. I offer the Person-Centred approach which works towards helping each person to overcome their own difficulties as an individual in their own way. 'A state of well-being is in which an individual can realise his or her own potential, cope with the normal stress of life, work productively and make a contribution to his or her community' (WHO, 2013).

Often things we experience in life can be difficult to talk about especially to family and friends and this can leave us feeling isolated and feeling like we can't cope with our everyday lives. It can be a very daunting experience to come and talk to someone unknown initially, but I will enable you to explore any issues that you bring to the sessions at your own pace. Whatever you would like to talk about is entirety up to you.

Interventions
I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). In this approach the counsellor is viewed as an Emotion coach and I will work to help you become more aware of, accept and make sense of your emotional experience. I will aim to help you develop your emotional awareness, intelligence and understanding, so that you can deal with problems in a better way, and feel happier in yourself and in your relationships.

'Emotions greatly affect the quality of our lives and are the drivers of behaviour' (Egan, 2002).

By integrating other approaches and techniques into my practice, I can be sure that the way I work with you will suit your needs. This could involve incorporating mindfulness techniques to aim to build you a sense of self care and tension reduction.

Types of therapy
Existential, Humanistic, Gestalt, Person centred, Emotion Focused Therapy.
